Rich Murray Journalism Scholarship winners named

The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) have named two recipients of the Rich Murray Journalism Scholarship, Quinlan Moore from Middlesex High School and Daniel Polk from Hanover High School.

VaSID’s Rich Murray Journalism Scholarship is presented annually to a Virginia high school student who excels in the area of sports journalism and is pursuing a college degree in journalism, communications or a related field, preferably at an institution in Virginia.

A 1971 graduate of Washington and Lee University, Rich Murray served the profession for nearly 40 years at James Madison University and the University of Virginia.  Murray is a founding member of the Virginia Sports Information Directors in 1983, and served as the organization’s inaugural President.  Murray retired June 22, 2012, after remaining heavily involved in VaSID throughout his sports information career.

At Middlesex High School, Moore was involved with the yearbook staff, and served as copy editor, editor-in-chief and executive editor.  Moore also served as a contributing writer for her hometown paper, the Southside Sentinel.  She played softball and ran cross country, was a member of her school’s National Honor Society and the Future Business Leaders of America.

Moore’s community/volunteer activities include environmental roadside cleanup, school instruction on environmental issues at camp and the Urbanna Oyster Festival, and working bingo to raise money for the Virginia Legends travel softball team.  Moore will attend Lafayette College in the fall, where she intends to play softball.

Polk played tennis golf and basketball at Hanover, where he also served as a tennis instructor.  He wrote for his school’s newspaper, the Hanover Hawkeye, and was a freelance reporter for one of his hometown newspapers, the Mechanicsville Local.

Polk’s community/volunteer activities include serving as a volunteer coach for the Hanover Youth Basketball League, volunteer coach for the Oak Knoll Middle School girls’ tennis team, and with Student Organization for Developing Attitudes (SODA).  Polk will attend Stevens Tech this fall, where he intends to play tennis and has already been in contact with the sports information staff.
