New Hope GroceryA Charlottesville man is in custody after a two-vehicle crash that sent a vehicle into the side of New Hope Grocery.

Shannon Burton, 36, had been wanted for failing to appear in court on a previous driving on suspended license charge. He was traveling in the area of Laurel Hill Road and Interstate 81 in Verona Saturday morning when he passed an Augusta County sheriff’s deputy.

Burton reportedly covered his face as he drove past the deputy, who turned to pursue the vehicle.

Burton’s Lexus passed numerous vehicles on a solid line in the area of Pleasant Grove and Barrenridge Road.

The deputy activated his emergency equipment when he realized the vehicle was eluding and running other vehicles off the roadway.  The suspect ran the intersection at Route 612 and Long Meadow Road and was struck in the side by another vehicle traveling south.

The vehicle traveling south, after the collision, spun out of control and went into New Hope Grocery.  The suspect vehicle went airborne and landed on its side.  The driver exited the vehicle and ran on foot.  The deputy chased him on foot and caught him about a half-mile from the scene.

Burton now faces additional charges for reckless driving, eluding and obstructing justice.
