No charges in fatal bus accident on JMU campus

Chris Graham

The Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred on November 15, 2011, on the campus of James Madison University.  The crash occurred at 9:52 pm at the intersection of Carrier Drive and Bluestone Drive.  The crash involved a transportation bus owned by the City of Harrisonburg and a pedestrian which was a female JMU student.

The intersection was controlled by traffic signals and crosswalk signals.  The bus was making a left turn from Bluestone Drive into Carrier Drive and had a green signal when the pedestrian entered the crosswalk on a “do not walk” signal and was crossing Carrier Drive.  The left side of the bus struck the pedestrian.  The pedestrian died at the scene as the result of injuries sustained in the crash.  No one else was injured in the crash.

The driver of the bus is a 56-year-old female of Hinton, Va.  The main causative factor was determined as inattention on the part of the pedestrian. No charges will be filed against the bus driver.

The pedestrian has been identified as Jane Hwang, 18, a first-year James Madison University student from Fairfax, Va.

Members of the VSP Crash Reconstruction Team and Motor Carrier Safety responded to the scene and have completed their preliminary investigation which has been reviewed by the Rockingham County Commonwealth Attorney Office. The investigation was assisted by the James Madison University Police Department, City of Harrisonburg Police Department and Medical Examiner’s Office.
