New Dominion takes three VPA awards

The New Dominion Magazine won three awards in the 2010 Virginia Press Association News, Editorial and Photo Contest.

The awards were presented on April 9 at the VPA’s annual conference in Norfolk.

The magazine, published by Augusta Free Press LLC in Waynesboro, has won awards in the Specialty Publications category all three years in which it has been a member of the Virginia Press Association. This year 34 publications competed for recognition in the Speciality category.

The 2010 awards for The New Dominion included a first-place honor for editors Crystal and Chris Graham in headline writing, beating out Richmond Magazine, the Sweepstakes winner as the most honored magazine overall in 2010, which took second and third place in headline writing.

“Slightly better than the competition in a tough category to judge because all the entries are good,” the judge wrote of the winning entry from The New Dominion. “The entry is the better mix of type with available art while keeping the look clean with easy to read fonts.”

Photographer Mark Miller took second-place honors in the Pictorial Photo category for his photo of an assault victim in a case featured in the magazine’s October 2010 issue.

“Dramatic. Well composed,” the judge wrote of the photo. “Good graphic sense and feeling not only with the phone image but also use of framing and composition.”

The award was Miller’s first as staff photographer with The New Dominion. Miller had previously won honors for his photographer work as a staff member at The News Leader in Staunton.

Chris Graham took the final honor for The New Dominion this year, a third-place award in the Public Affairs Writing category for a story on State Sen. Emmett Hanger that appeared in the magazine’s December 2010 issue.

“Human interest with a larger hook for the reader,” the judge wrote of the story. “This was a well-written piece that took the national conversation about our state of politics and played it out very locally. Nice work.”

The New Dominion Magazine debuted in 2007 and has now won eight awards from the Virginia Press Association for its work. Editors Crystal and Chris Graham have previously won VPA honors while members of staffs at The News Virginian in Waynesboro and The Observer in Charlottesville.

The New Dominion’s parent company, Augusta Free Press LLC, was founded in 2002. In addition to publishing The New Dominion, the company also produces a daily news website, www.AugustaFreePress.com, and a daily sports website, www.VaSportsOnline.com, as well as a new print publication, New Dominion Tourist, which has a companion daily tourism website at www.NewDominionTourist.com.
