bridgewaterMankind’s comprehension of the solar system has advanced dramatically in the past 10 years. Missions are in progress or being planned that will explore the solar system from the sun to Pluto.

Dr. Russell De Young, a senior research scientist in the Science Directorate of NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., will speak on “NASA Advances in Understanding the Solar System,” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, in Cole Hall at Bridgewater College.

De Young’s presentation will highlight some of the discoveries NASA and agencies in other countries have recently made in understanding the unique characteristics of the planets, as well as the search for life beyond Earth.

He is currently involved with research on lasers to determine the atmospheric profile of ozone to better understand atmospheric air quality. De Young also studies how climate change will affect the NASA Langley Research Center.

De Young has published more than 90 papers in scientific journals and has obtained five U.S. patents for his inventions.

He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Florida and a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, where he studied the use of pulsed nuclear reactors as a pumping source for gas lasers.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college, located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to approximately 1,800 undergraduate students.
