The No. 2 Virginia men’s tennis team (10-2, 2-0 ACC) closed out its first weekend of ACC contests with a 6-1 victory at No. 53 Virginia Tech (8-3, 1-1 ACC) on Sunday (March 6) at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.
“Playing at Virginia Tech is really difficult and they are, without question, one of the best teams we have played this year,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “Our team is doing some great things and the character some of our guys showed tonight was so impressive. I see a ton of players improving in this group and we as a staff are so pleased. We still have a lot of work to do, but we are on the right track.”
Virginia won the doubles point after junior J.C. Aragone (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and sophomore Henriek Wiersholm (Kirkland, Wash.) logged a 6-4 victory at No. 3 followed by a 7-5 win at No. 2 by sophomore Collin Altamirano (Sacramento, Calif.) and junior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.).
In singles, Altarmirano downed Amerigo Contini 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 and Corinteli defeated Jai Corbett 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6 to give Virginia a 3-0 lead. After Kwiatkowski surrendered his match at No. 2 to Andreas Bjerrehus, Wiersholm clinched the match with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Mitch Harper at No. 5.
At No. 1 singles, Shane won his first set, 6-3, over Joao Monteiro, but dropped his second 6-3. The third set went to a tiebreaker with Shane prevailing 7-2 to put UVA up 5-1. Shane is currently ranked No. 14 in the country while Monteiro is No. 20.
In the final match to wrap up, Aragone defeated Tessaro 7-5, 6-7 (8), 6-1 on court four.
The Virginia-Virginia Tech match is part of the Commonwealth Clash presented by Virginia529, which is a head-to-head, points-based competition between the athletic teams of the Cavaliers and Hokies. The Commonwealth Clash encourages a friendly, statewide rivalry between the two schools across all school-sponsored sports with 21 individual event points on the line. The school that accumulates 11 points or more will be crowned the winner and take home the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash trophy. Virginia, with the win today, now leads 8-5 in this year’s Clash.
Virginia will spend the spring recess week in Tulsa, Okla., taking on No. 20 Tulsa on Thursday, March 10 and No. 13 Oklahoma on Saturday, March 12. The Cavaliers return home to host N.C. State on Friday, March 18 at 3 p.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center.
