virginia tennisThe No. 2 Virginia men’s tennis team (15-2, 5-0 ACC) earned a 6-1 victory over No. 46 Notre Dame (10-8, 4-2 ACC) on Friday (March 25) at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va.

“It was a beautiful day to play tennis and I am thrilled that we had the success we did today,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “The team played really well from top to bottom. Notre Dame is a great team and I was very impressed with their fight and desire on the court. We are looking forward to another great day of tennistomorrow when we take on Boston College.”

Virginia won the doubles point after junior Luca Corinteli (Alexandria, Va.) and senior Ryan Shane (Fall Church, Va.), the No. 2 doubles team in the nation, earned a 6-2 victory at No. 1 followed by a 6-4 victory from junior J.C. Aragone (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and sophomore Collin Altamirano (Sacramento, Calif.) on No. 3.

In singles, Shane battled in a tiebreaker in his first set, prevailing 12-10, to give the Cavaliers a sweep across all six courts in the first set. Junior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.), currently ranked No. 7 in singles, won his match against Josh Hagar 6-3, 6-4 to put the Cavaliers up 2-0. Aragone and Altamirano finished off both of their singles matches a few moments apart to clinch the victory for the Cavaliers. Aragone won his match 7-6, 6-4 over Alex Lawson and Altamirano downed Eddy Covalschi 6-4, 6-2.

Senior Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) won five-straight games in his second set to rally for a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Sabacinski on the No. 6 court. Sophomore Henrik Wiersholm (Kirkland, Wash.) closed out a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 5 to put the Cavaliers up 6-0.

After Shane dropped his second set 7-5, he and Quentin Monaghan played a third-set tiebreaker instead of a full third set with Monaghan edging Shane 10-6 to earn the Fighting Irish their lone point.

The Cavaliers close out the current homestand hosting Boston College (3-11, 0-6 ACC) on Saturday, March 26 at 1 p.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center. There will be free pizza for fans (while supplies last).
