Lynchburg: Suspect in police custody in Dec. 18 homicide investigation

The Lynchburg Police Department announced an arrest today in the Dec. 18 homicide on Campbell Avenue.

John Levi Snead, 63, of Lynchburg, was taken into custody today.

He has been charged with:

  • Second degree murder
  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
  • Brandishing a firearm
  • Reckless handling of a firearm
  • Discharging a firearm within the city

The investigation is ongoing.

The victim, David L. Vaughter Jr., 52, of Madison Heights, was shot after an argument, according to police.

Snead was named a suspect in the case one day after the homicide.

The Lynchburg Police Department continues to ask if anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area of the 1400 block of Campbell Avenue on the evening of Dec. 18, or who may have video surveillance or doorbell camera footage that may assist the investigation, to contact (434) 455-6174 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 798-5900.
