Game Coverage

Media timeout: Virginia 10-4, 15:44/1st

This one is going to play at FSU’s pace, it appears.

Johann Grunloh with two quick buckets – a three and a follow-up dunk.

Media timeout: Florida State 17-15, 10:46/1st

Virginia isn’t playing well with the current tempo.

Four turnovers on 16 possessions, 2-of-8 on threes, 4-of-8 in the paint.

Media timeout: Florida State 24-19, 7:46/1st

Getting good looks, generally; just not making them – 7-of-21 overall, 3-of-11 from three, 4-of-10 in the paint.

Pace: 71.8 possessions.

Media timeout: Florida State 28-26, 3:08/1st

Virginia is allowing FSU to not only dictate tempo, but where the ‘Hoos start their offense – which is well out beyond the three-point line.

Not getting dribble penetration; just passing the ball around the perimeter.

Gotta get the ball in the paint, either for post looks or kickouts.

Half: Tied at 32

Florida State dictated pace, forced UVA out of its offense, and the best it could do was a tie game.

FSU led by as many as seven.

Virginia hung around because of what it did on defense: the ‘Noles shot 9-of-30 from the field, 3-of-16 from three, 6-of-14 in the paint, 3-of-9 at the rim, four turnovers.

They had the benefit of getting sent to the line 13 times on Virginia’s nine fouls; Virginia got eight FTAs on FSU’s eight fouls.

Virginia: 11-of-30 FG, 5-of-13 3FG, one midrange miss, 6-of-16 in the paint, 5-of-12 at the rim, seven turnovers.

Tempo: 34 possessions/68 pace.

Rebounding rates: 30 percent offense (6-of-20), 81 percent defense (17-of-21).

Second-chance points: 9-7 UVA.

Points off turnovers: 7-6 UVA.

Points off threes: 15-9 UVA.

Free throws: 11-of-13 FSU, 5-of-8 UVA.

Media timeout: FSU 42-37, 15:33/2nd

FSU just wants it more tonight.

The Virginia side is trying to attack more on offense.

It just seems like there’s an extra FSU kid on the floor on both ends.

Virginia timeout: FSU 47-45, 10:33/2nd

Six second-half turnovers for Virginia, 13 for the game.

And in spite of this, it’s a two-point game.

Credit to FSU: they’ve forced Virginia to play their game.

Media timeout: FSU 54-48, 7:09/2nd

Fifteen of the 19 FGAs for Virginia in the second half are threes.

Six turnovers.

That’s YMCA ball.

Media timeout: FSU 58-55, 3:10/2nd

Jacari White has 14 this half on 5-of-8 shooting, 4-of-7 from three.

The rest of the team: 4-of-19 from the floor, 1-of-13 from three.

Thijs de Ridder has been absent: five points (1-of-6 FG, 3-of-4 FT).

Final: Virginia 61-58

Virginia held FSU without a bucket for the final 6:33, closing on an 11-1 run – well, not a run, per se, more like a crawl – to escape Tallahassee with a 61-58 win.

Jacari White should get the W here – he had 19 points, 17 in the second half, including the go-ahead bucket, a dunk on a fast break with 1:12 to go.

UVA (21-3, 10-2 ACC) survived a night with 14 turnovers and 37.7 percent shooting by holding FSU (11-13, 4-7 ACC) to 29.0 percent shooting, including an atrocious 6-of-33 (18.2 percent) from three.
