Game coverage

Media timeout: Virginia 9-6, 15:56/1st

It’s 9-6 ‘Hoos despite the fouls being 3-0 Virginia; Sam Lewis was tackled on a make at the rim, no call, but then he was whistled after bumping into a ballhandler 40 feet from the hoop.

Jacari White just turned the ball over, not surprisingly, after being raked across the arm while dribbling.

It’s going to be that kind of night with Duke. Again.

UVA is 4-of-5 from the floor; Duke is 2-of-8.

Media timeout: Virginia 14-13, 11:53/1st

Maliq Brown just undercut Johann Grunloh and dragged him away from an offensive rebound; no call.

Fouls: Virginia 4-0.

Credit due: our guys are hanging around.

Definitely penetrating the paint better.

Duke has a 5-3 advantage in offensive boards; UVA 5-4 in second-chance points.

Media timeout: Duke 24-23, 6:56/1st

Duke now has been called for two fouls – both happen to be on Maliq Brown.

Watch the big setting the screen at the top of the key – whoever it is, usually Brown or Cameron Boozer, they’re moving, hip-checking, hand-checking.

All illegal.

They’ve been called for one moving screen.

They have no offense without those moving screens.

They’re 7-of-11 at the rim because of the gaps they create with them.

Media timeout: Duke 29-27, 3:58/1st

Wondering what the call was that got us to the media timeout. Nothing on StatBroadcast explaining what happened.

The ball didn’t go out of bounds. No foul. No jump ball.

Odd.

Virginia is down two despite being outrebounded 18-12 and outscored in the paint 20-14.

Half: Duke 38, Virginia 36

Duke got up seven, 36-29, with 2:31 to go, and had the ball with a chance to add to the lead.

Credit to Virginia: cut it to two at the break.

Good shooting, generally – 13-of-28 from the floor, 4-of-14 from three, 9-of-14 in the paint.

Need to fix the defense on the screen at the top of the key; Duke was 11-of-15 at the rim. Need to force them out more.

I don’t know how, other than hope the refs call the moving screens.

They called two.

Maybe try drop coverage, and live with Cam Boozer shooting the three.

Onyenso and Grunloh evenly split minutes at the five: Onyenso was +5, Grunloh was -7.

Media timeout: Virginia 49-45, 15;41/2nd

Virginia is 4-of-6 from the floor (3-of-3 from three) to start the half.

I like the adjustment on the screens. Let’s see how Scheyer adjusts to the adjustment.

Media timeout: Duke 53-51, 11:51/2nd

Onyenso has seven blocked shots.

Duke is 1-of-7 at the rim in the second half.

Issue on offense: shot selection. Had a couple of opportunities there on breaks to attack the paint, and settled for threes that missed.

Media timeout: Game tied at 58, 7:45/2nd

Cam Boozer is bound and determined to score in the paint on Onyenso, who just blocked another Boozer shot at the rim.

Duke is pulling Cam Boozer out to run the offense as a point forward because it gets Onyenso away from the rim.

The guards need to defend the backdoor cuts better.

Duke timeout: Game tied at 63, 4:57/2nd

Both teams: exhausted.

Virginia got a short break for Onyenso, but needed to get him back – Grunloh just isn’t up to guarding Boozer.

Media timeout: Duke 66-65, 3:10/2nd

Thijs de Ridder, who has four points tonight, will be shooting two FTs after the timeout.

It’s there for somebody to win.

Isaiah Evans worries me.

Final: Duke 74, Virginia 70

Bad execution on a couple of defensive sets, and a missed front end of a one-and-one that would have tied it with 50 seconds left.

Sucks to lose, but this was a helluva ballgame.
