I would like to congratulate Augusta Free Press on your in-depth reporting on the miserable state of education in the Waynesboro school system, and want to make some suggestions that might, in the long term, make the situation better.
One, remove the entire school board and have the State Board of Education appoint a new board because:
- Whatever actions or non-actions they have taken in the past have not improved the academic performance of our students.
- They have allowed nepotism, leading to the appointment of non-qualified staff.
- They are apparently bent on appointing a person to a leadership post who has been part of the administration that failed to correct the academic performance.
Two, City Council should take an aggressive leadership role. They spend our tax dollars and have a responsibility to see that the funds are spent wisely; to wit:
- The City Council should tie any school appropriation to improvements in system-wide academic performance.
- City Council should appoint a council member to attend all school board meetings and to monitor their performance.
- The City Council should require the School Board to report annually at a public Council meeting what steps are being taken to improve system-wide academic performance.
Three, tere should be an effort made to better inform and educate the public on the School Board activities. Your efforts are a step in the right direction, but I’ll bet 9 out of 10 people don’t have a clue about what goes on in the School Board or the school administration.
Do we need an “internet influencer”? [Only a desperate situation would ever make me recommend such a horrible thing.]
Part of the problem is laziness by the public [including me] that lets things like this happen.
