Kaine campaign video puts spotlight on Allen spending record

AFP

The Tim Kaine Senate campaign released a web video on Friday highlighting opponent George Allen’s spending record.

The video, “George Allen: Big Spender,” highlights the stark discrepancy between the fiscal message George Allen shares on the campaign trail and his long record of fiscal irresponsibility and big spending.  And no day better represents his term of turning record surpluses into record deficits than March 16.

On this day seven years ago, then-Senator Allen voted against a measure to reinstate the Senate Pay-As-You-Go (PAYGO) rules that helped rein in spending and create a record budget surplus in the 1990s. And on this day six years ago, Allen voted for the fourth time to raise the debt ceiling without requiring corresponding spending cuts.

“Whether it was increasing Virginia general fund spending by 45% as governor or voting for Senate spending that turned record surpluses into record deficits, George Allen’s record of big spending does not match his reelection claims of fiscal restraint,” said Kaine for Virginia Press Secretary Lily Adams.

“While George Allen voted against pay as you go rules that put the nation’s fiscal house in order in the 1990’s, he had no problem signing off on spending that added $3 trillion to the debt or raising the debt ceiling four times without requiring any spending cuts. Just as George Allen admits, spending was a problem when he was in the Senate, which is why Virginian’s can’t afford to send him back.”
