Interesting turn: Dave ‘Mudcat’ Saunders backs Ken Cuccinelli

A report in the Richmond Times-Dispatch today has veteran Democratic strategist Dave “Mudcat” Saunders backing Republican Ken Cuccinelli for governor.

The reason: Democratic candidate Terry McAuliffe, according to Saunders, is a “corporatist.”

“What these corporatists have done to us in rural America and in urban America,” Saunders said in a telephone interview with the T-D. “I can’t support a corporatist. I just can’t. This guy is not my kind of Democrat.”

Saunders has made a career of advising Virginia Democrats on how to pick up votes in rural parts of the state, most notably the state’s two Democratic senators, Mark Warner and Tim Kaine.
