VMI twin brother standouts Chavis and Travis Holmes were both named to the 2009 All-Big South Conference post-season squads, as announced Monday by the league office.
Chavis Holmes was tabbed a First-Team All-Conference selection in the voting, which was conducted among the conference coaches and selected media. It marked the second time that he had been designated all-conference, joining last year’s honor, when he was named to the league’s Second-Team. Travis Holmes joined his brother among the All-Conference selections, as he earned a spot among the conference’s Second-Team honorees.
Chavis Holmes recently surpassed the 2,000 career point scoring mark (2,003), becoming only the fourth player in VMI history to achieve that feat. He paces the conference in scoring (22.1 PPG) and ranks first in three-point percentage, second in steals, third in free-throw percentage, fifth in field goal percentage and 10th in assists.
In conference games, Chavis leads in scoring and ranks first in steals, first in three-point percentage, second in free-throw percentage, sixth in field goal percentage and 10th in assists. He produced three games of over 30 points, as he exploded against Virginia (31), Coastal Carolina (35), and Charleston Southern (33). In addition, the senior places third in the nation in steals, sixth in three-point percentage, and 12th in scoring. Chavis was named Big South Player of the Week Dec. 15, and Co-Big South Player of the Week Jan. 5, on the strength of his back-to-back double-doubles against Gardner-Webb and Charleston Southern. Chavis has scored in double figures in 27-of-28 games this year, and hit a season-high six three-point shots against both Southern Virginia and Radford.
Travis Holmes ranks first in the conference in steals, third in scoring (19.0), fourth in free-throw percentage, fifth in assists and eighth in field goal percentage. In addition, he leads the nation in steals and ranks in the top-40 in scoring. He did not qualify in conference game only statistics due to missing five games with a knee injury.
He scored 30 points and grabbed seven rebounds in season-opening win over Kentucky and also scored career-high 37 points vs. UNCA. Travis dished out a career-high 11 assists against High Point (1/24) has scored in double figures in 22 of 23 games and produced back-to-back double-doubles versus Radford (13 pts.-12 rebounds) and Liberty (22 pts.-10 rebounds). He was named Big South Player of the Week Nov. 17 and Dec. 8, and against High Point last Saturday night, Travis became the ninth player in NCAA Division I history with at least 1,500 career points, 500 rebounds, 300 assists, and 300 steals.
Combined, the Holmes became the all-time twin brother scoring leaders at the Division I level on Jan. 24, as they scored 47 points versus High Point. Their total now sits at 3,676 career points. The entire listing of Big South All-Conference selections follows.
