Scholars Latino Initiative will host a fall event titled SLI Celebración on Saturday, Nov. 9, with food, drinks, music and dancing. The event will also highlight the successes of its scholars.

Music will be provided by the Lua Project.

Celebración foods will include locally sourced flautas, quesadillas, pupusas, gorditas, sopa de camarón, jalapeño poppers, nachos, cuban black bean soup, fruits and veggies, tres leches, pastries, coffee and hot chocolate, te de Jamaica and horchata.

“The incredible foods, beverages, and music have received so much praise in recent years, we’ve decided to bring them all back together again this year,” said Christopher Clymer Kurtz, SLI director of development.  “But the main highlight will be hearing from SLI alumni. The students SLI supports are the real reason we’re celebrating.”

SLI offers programs to support Latino/a/x high school students in Harrisonburg, Richmond and Winchester. Through collaborations with university and high school staff, faculty and students, SLI provides college access opportunities throughout high school. In addition, its scholars can become eligible for financial support for college success.

Since 2012, SLI has served 200 scholars and awarded nearly $700,000 in financial support for students.

SLI Celebración will be held at The Loft at Liberty Street in Downtown Harrisonburg from 6-9:30 p.m.
