A 14-year-old girl is facing serious charges after driving intoxicated in a crash that killed a one-year-old child.

The accident occurred at 2:04 a.m. on Monday on Interstate 64 eastbound at the 261 mile marker in Hampton.

The infant received life-threatening injuries in the crash and died on Thursday, according to an update from Virginia State Police. The child was not properly restrained in the vehicle when the crash occurred.

The teen was driving a silver sedan heading eastbound when she went off the right side of the interstate and struck the guardrail. The sedan then went off of the left side of the interstate and struck the jersey wall.

The teen driver suffered serious injuries. The relationship between the teen and the infant has not been disclosed.
