A Broadway star who won a Tony and a Grammy for originating the role of Angelica Schuyler in “Hamilton” will open the Moss Arts Center 2024-25 season in Blacksburg.

Renée Elise Goldsberry will be joined by a band and background vocalists on Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m. for an evening of Broadway hits and American songbook classics in the center’s Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre.

Goldsberry earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for Disney+’s filmed version of the musical. She currently stars in Tina Fey’s Netflix sitcom, “Girls5Eva,” receiving Critics Choice and Television Critics Association award nominations for her performance as Wickie Roy.

A Broadway veteran, her memorable stage work includes seminal musicals such as “Rent,” “The Color Purple,” “The Lion King,” “Dreamgirls,” and the play “Good People” opposite Frances McDormand, among countless others. Her screen credits include the title role in “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” starring Oprah Winfrey, CBS’s “The Good Wife,” the independent feature “Waves,” and two Daytime Emmy nominations for work on “One Life to Live.”

“Satisfied,” a documentary about her life executive produced by Steven Spielberg for Amblin Entertainment, premiered in June at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival.

Still to come in 2024, Goldsberry will release an album of new music that showcases her talents as both a songwriter and recording artist.

The theatre is located within the Street and Davis Performance Hall at 190 Alumni Mall.

Tickets for the performance are $40-$85 and $10 for students and youth 18 and under. Tickets may be purchased online or by calling (540) 231-5300.

Following the performance, audience members can sing along to Broadway favorites with “Karaoke in the Cube.” The event is held in the Moss Arts Center’s Cube from 9-11 p.m. Drinks will be available for purchase. “Karaoke in the Cube” is free, but registration is required.
