The average price for a gallon of gas in Virginia is below the $3-per-gallon mark, even as the average nationwide ticked up a penny last week.
“Most of these increases should be temporary with declines returning in the days and weeks ahead,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, which reported Monday that the average nationally is at $3.16 a gallon, and in Virginia is at $2.96 a gallon.
The national average price of diesel has declined 2.1 cents in the last week and stands at $3.55 per gallon.
The lowest price in Virginia found by GasBuddy was $2.52 a gallon.
The average in Roanoke is $2.87 a gallon, and it’s $2.98 per gallon in Richmond.
The near-term trend is for prices at the pump to go still lower.
“For California and areas of Nevada and western Arizona, areas that had been left out of the recent drops, refinery issues are improving, and gas prices should start moving lower,” De Haan said. “While the future looks good for gas prices to continue trending lower for most in the weeks ahead, oil’s jump may mute the downside potential just a bit, for now.”
