A former Augusta County resident was seriously injured following a traffic stop in Smyth County on Aug. 9 that killed his law-enforcement partner.

Deputy Michael Fedorchuk, a former Middle River Jail employee, received a gunshot wound to the shoulder. After a successful surgery, he is expected to make a full recovery, according to fundraiser set up online to help the family.

Fedorchuk is married to Grace, and the couple has two children, Penelope and Palmer.

“While the physical wounds will heal, it will be a lengthy process,” the fundraiser reads. “When it comes to the emotional wounds, what Deputy Fedorchuk experienced that afternoon is nothing short of devastating. Deputy Fedorchuk is nothing short of a hero, and he needs all the support we can give.”

“Law enforcement agencies across the Commonwealth are working together to try to offset financial burdens,” Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith shared today.

Smith also shared Fedorchuk’s connection to Augusta County.

A fundraiser has also set up for the family of Smyth County Deputy Hunter Reedy who was fatally shot and killed in the same incident.  Reedy, 28, was also married with three children.

After Reedy’s death, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin ordered flags be flown at half-staff.

“We ask for everyone to lift-up in prayer and support the family, friends, and colleagues of Deputy Hunter Reedy, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty. It’s a stark reminder that our law enforcement heroes risk their lives every day and his bravery and commitment to protecting and serving the Smyth County community will never be forgotten,” Youngkin said in a statement. “Suzanne and I are so grateful for the support being poured out for Deputy Reedy’s family.

“We continue to pray for the swift and full recovery of Deputy Fedorchuk, who was also struck by gunfire in the same incident. During this difficult time, we stand united in support of our entire law enforcement community and their families.”

The fundraisers were organized through Fund the First by the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office.
