Gov. Glenn Youngkin has Virginia joining the chorus of red states that will be flying their U.S. flags at full-staff for the Trump inauguration, interrupting the 30-day mourning period put into effect by Joe Biden in memory of former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on Dec. 29.
“I hereby order that the flags shall be raised at 11am on Monday, January 20, 2025 and lowered at sunrise on Tuesday, January 21, 2025,” reads a directive from Youngkin, a Republican, signed and made public on Saturday.
The move aligns Virginia with the order of House Speaker Mike Johnson for full-staff flags at the U.S. Capitol for the Trump inauguration that has since been adopted by a flood of Republican states.
Of note: California and Colorado, both led by Democrats – Gavin Newsom and Jared Polis – are also temporarily raising their flags in honor of the Trump inauguration.
We can speculate here that Newsom is bending the knee because his state is going to need serious federal government support to rebuild from the devastating Los Angeles wildfires, and we all know that Trump likes to threaten to hold up federal money based on political grievances.
Polis, who has vocally supported Trump’s initiatives on immigration and is somehow a fan of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., might as well be a Republican.
