A wanted man is being treated for life-threatening injuries after sheriff deputies in Fredericksburg shot him during a traffic stop.

Lawrence D. Toler II, 37, of Woodford, is being treated at Mary Washington Hospital.

A bystander was also shot and was treated for minor injuries. He has been released from the hospital.

No deputies were injured.

The incident happened at 8:50 p.m. at a gas station on the 3000 block of Plank Road in Fredericksburg. According to the sheriff’s office, deputies from the street crimes task force attempted to apprehend Toler, and as they approached his vehicle, he attempted to flee and backed into a deputy’s vehicle.

Toler allegedly pointed a firearm at a deputy, and multiple deputies discharged their service weapons, according to the police report.

Toler was shot along with the bystander, who was standing outside the gas station.

A firearm was found inside Toler’s vehicle.

Toler is wanted in Chesterfield on multiple felony warrants, according to Virginia State Police.

At the request of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Culpeper Field Office is investigating the shooting. When the investigation is complete, the investigative file will be turned over to the Fredericksburg Commonwealth’s Attorney for review and adjudication.
