Fishburne’s Tre Harris commits to Kansas State

Tre Harris caught the attention of Kansas State coaches the first week of practice at Fishburne Military School in September.

The Illinois postgrad decided on Sunday to commit to the 2013 Big 12 runnerup.

“I’m really happy with where I’m at. I’m glad the way it worked out,” said Harris, who chose K-State over Delaware and Toledo.

Coming out of high school, the Edwardsville, Ill., native, who averaged 17 points, 9.1 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game for Edwardsville High, which finished with a 31-3 record, had some mid-major offers, but felt he could reach a little higher.

“I wanted to work a lot on my game. I felt if I had an extra year to work on my game, polish my body, get a little bit stronger before I go to college, it sounds like a really good idea. That’s what got me here,” said Harris, a 6’5”, 180-pound two guard.

FMS postgrad coach Ed Huckaby said Harris “scores the ball, baby.”

“He scores deep, midrange, off the dribble. Knows how to use screens. Tre can play,” said Huckaby, who has two BCS conference recruits on this year’s team with Harris and Jabari Craig, who committed to Southern Cal earlier this month.

Harris will play at K-State for Bruce Weber, who isn’t a stranger to Fishburne. Weber and his staff were on hand for several preseason practices and one in-season tournament on campus in Waynesboro in 2012.

Coaches like attending FMS practices because a college coach can learn more about a player in practice than in game situations, said Huckaby, himself a veteran D1 college assistant now in his fifth year as the founding coach of the postgrad program at Fishburne.

“Practice tells you if a guy is being taught how to play. Games will only tell you if a guy is more athletic, maybe bigger, stronger than the next guy. But does that translate into being good at the collegiate level?” Huckaby said.
