Fishburne PG basketball improves to 3-0 with 93-71 win over New River

fms-logoJeremy Harris (6’7”, 185, Greensboro, N.C./Coastal Carolina) had 30 points and 12 rebounds, Chris Shields (6’8”, 190, Martinsburg, Va.) had 11 points and nine rebounds, and Stanley Christian (6’7”, 200, Norfolk, Va.) added 11 points as the fourth-ranked Fishburne postgrad basketball team wore down a scrappy New River CC team for a 93-71 pounding Saturday afternoon in Waynesboro.

Fishburne (3-0) held a 42-40 halftime led but stayed steady throughout  the game despite hot three-point shooting by the visitors in the first half.

“I think our size and depth just wore them down,” said Harris.

NewRiver (1-1) played with a lot of fight despite being out sized at every position. Lead by Chris Dobbins and some balanced scoring, the smaller Marlins looked for the upset early.

“I thought we did a pretty good job defensively, but our free-throw shooting didn’t help our cause,” said Fishburne coach Ed Huckaby.

The Caissons shot only 16-of-25 from the line, allowing the visitors to keep it close. Otherwise what was a close game early in the second half could have been a rout.

New River had trouble with the Caisson’s size all night, shooting only 34 percent for the game and being outrebounded 44-27.

“I thought our effort was great, but the execution needs to tighten up. I feel the more we play, we will see some improvement.” said Huckaby.

The Caissons have a big week ahead, hosting Miller School Thursday night at 7pm followed by a big game with the Naval Academy JV on Saturday at 2pm.

“I think it would great for the entire Valley community to come support some great basketball this week,” Huckaby said.
