On Tuesday, First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe will attend the Shenandoah Valley Produce Auction in Dayton, just outside Harrisonburg. She will be accompanied by representatives from the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank and the local finance sector, as well as members of the education and economic development sectors of Harrisonburg.
McAuliffe has long cared about the welfare of children and is particularly interested in making sure no child goes to bed hungry. Last year, Governor McAuliffe established the Commonwealth Council on Bridging the Nutritional Divide, which the First Lady chairs. This council aims to promote the work of Virginia’s farmers and support programs focused on nutrition and access to food.
The Farm Fresh program launched this past spring by the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank encompasses all of the elements the First Lady wants to promote. On Tuesday, the First Lady will learn how fresh produce makes it from the auction to the Food Bank’s partner food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters, and ultimately, on the tables of our neighbors in need.
