Final PPP poll: McAuliffe, Northam, Herring with leads in state races

Terry McAuliffe is seen as the lesser of two evils, mediocre choices, whatever, and thus seems poised to win the 2013 Virginia governor race.

state-capitol2That’s the analysis from Public Policy Polling, which has McAuliffe, a Democrat, defeating Republican Ken Cuccinelli and Libertarian Robert Sarvis in Tuesday’s election.

McAuliffe is at 50 percent in the final PPP poll of the 2013 election season, released late Sunday, with Cuccinelli at 43 percent and Sarvis at 4 percent. The 4 percent figure for Sarvis is by far his weakest showing among several recent polls, some of which have had him as high as 12 percent.

Democrat Ralph Northam is ahead by a comfortable 52 percent to 39 percent margin over Republican E.W. Jackson in the lieutenant governor race, and Democrat Mark Herring has a slight lead, 47 percent to 45 percent, over Mark Obenshain in the race for attorney general.

At the top, the race comes down to the independents, which are splitting for McAuliffe by an eight-point margin, and self-described moderates, who back margin by a 42-point gap.
