The Don Beyer campaign went out of its way to send me a statement from the Northern Virginia congressman in which he makes it clear that he backs Joe Biden, so, here goes.
“I support President Biden. I support the Biden-Harris ticket, and look forward to helping defeat Donald Trump in November,” Beyer said in a statement. “I was proud to host an event this week in Northern Virginia with the President, and will continue doing all I can to support the Biden-Harris campaign in Virginia and across the country.”
So, we now know where five of the eight members of the Virginia Democrat delegation in Congress stand on the status of the president, who is facing calls from all over to drop out of the 2024 race in the wake of his disastrous performance in a June 27 CNN debate.
Beyer and U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine are solidly on Team Biden, along with Bobby Scott, who CNN reported spoke in support of Biden remaining on the ticket on a Sunday conference call of top House Democratic leaders.
Gerry Connolly, who we wrote about earlier today, is very much on the fence.
U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, as of Friday, was reportedly trying to organize a group of top Senate Democrats to meet with Biden to convince him to drop out of the race.
I haven’t seen the three women in the Virginia House Democratic caucus – Jennifer McClellan, Abigail Spanberger and Jennifer Wexton – coming down on one side or the other.
