The Commonwealth Transportation Board approved four contracts at its monthly meeting totaling $70.1 million for maintenance and construction projects in the Northern Virginia and Fredericksburg VDOT districts.
Jones Branch Connector will be constructed in Fairfax County
A $39.7 million contract was awarded to Archer Western Construction LLC, of Atlanta, Ga., to connect the Tysons East and Tyson Central areas with a new link over Interstate 495. The project will provide another link across the Beltway in Tysons, and will make it easier for drivers to access the I-495 Express Lanes and the McLean Metro Station.
A new four-lane road and bridge will be constructed from the I-495 Express Lanes/Jones Branch Drive interchange to Scotts Crossing Road. Improvements will also be made along the access road from Jones Branch Drive to the I-495 Express Lanes, and Scotts Crossing Road, including a wide median for future expansion, bike lanes, wide sidewalks, street lighting and landscaping.
The project is expected to be completed by November 2019.
Route 606 bridge over I-95 will be replaced in Spotsylvania County
A $16.5 million design-build contract was awarded to Shirley Contracting Company, of Lorton, to replace the Route 606 bridge over Interstate 95 in the Fredericksburg District. Improvements will also be made to Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road), including turn lanes and a sidewalk on the new bridge. New interstate ramps will also be constructed.
Project completion is expected by September 2019.
Pavement Maintenance Planned in the Fredericksburg and Northern Virginia Districts
Two contracts totaling $13.9 million were awarded to complete needed pavement maintenance in the Fredericksburg and Northern Virginia districts.
An $8.1 million contract was awarded to Superior Paving Corporation, of Gainesville, for paving in Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties.
A $5.8 million contract for slurry sealing work in Loudoun County was awarded to Slurry Pavers Inc., of Richmond.

In advance of each CTB meeting, VDOT Commissioner Charles Kilpatrick also approves contracts up to $5 million in value. From the September 28 and October 26, 2016 bid lettings, the commissioner approved 18 contracts worth an approximate total of $21.7 million for construction and maintenance projects on Virginia’s interstates and primary and secondary roads.
Appointed by the governor, the 17-member CTB establishes the administrative policies for Virginia’s transportation system. The CTB allocates highway funding to specific projects, locates routes and provides funding for airports, seaports and public transportation. The board normally meets on the third Wednesday of the month in months when action meetings are scheduled.
