The No. 12 UVA men’s cross country team finished third at the Penn State Open Friday at the Blue and White Golf Course in University Park, Pa.
The Cavaliers finished third with 78 points, behind Oklahoma State (47) and Ole Miss (49). Virginia Tech was fourth with 125 points, followed by Texas (161).
Redshirt sophomore Brent Demarest (Charleston, S.C.) led UVA across the line in sixth place overall, finishing the 5.2-mile course in 25:07. Freshman Lachlan Cook (Brisbane, Australia) was seventh in 25:10, while senior Zach Herriott (Kansas City, Mo.) placed ninth 25:12. Junior Chase Weaverling (Darnestown, Md.) was 15th, while redshirt freshman John Pace (Chantilly, Va.) rounded out the scoring five in 41st.
“We were very good through four guys today, but we need one of those young men at 5-6-7 to close that gap if we are going to be the team we want to be,” UVA men’s cross country coach Pete Watson said. “The three redshirt freshmen have a lot of talent, but are limited on race experience. They are only going to get better in the coming weeks. Having three guys in the top 10 at a meet like this is a huge positive.”
Next up, the Cavaliers will compete at the ACC Championships Oct. 28 in Cary, N.C.
