Concussion, starring Will Smith, to be shown at Bridgewater College

Concussion2Concussion, starring Will Smith portraying Dr. Bennet Omahu, a Nigerian-born pathologist who brought the issue of brain damage in retired NFL players to the forefront, will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, in Cole Hall at Bridgewater College.

Released in December 2015, Concussion is a biographical sports film directed and written by Peter Landesman and based on the exposé, “Game Brain,” by Jeanne Marie Laskas published in 2009 by GQ magazine.

Set in Pittsburgh in 2002, the movie centers on accomplished pathologist Omalu, who researches brain damage in football players who have suffered repeated concussions in the course of normal play.

Concussion also stars Alec Baldwin, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Albert Brooks.

The movie is free and open to the public.

Omalu will speak at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, in Nininger Hall at Bridgewater College.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to nearly 1,900 students.
