A two-out, three-run Jonathan Schoop homer capped a stunning Baltimore rally from six runs down in an 8-7 win at San Francisco Sunday afternoon.
The Giants led 7-1 in the seventh with Johnny Cueto (13-3, 2.97 ERA) rolling at that stage, having given up just a run on six hits through six.
An Adam Jones sac fly and a Hyun Soo Kim RBI double got the rally going, and then a Mark Trumbo solo homer and a JJ Hardy RBI single in the eighth brought the Orioles to within 7-5.
Kim lined out to start the ninth off San Francisco closer Santiago Casilla (2-4, 3.28 ERA, 1.14 WHIP). Manny Machado singled, and then Chris Davis struck out for the second out of the inning.
Trumbo worked a walk to bring up Schoop (.282 BA/.794 OPS, 17 HR, 59 RBI), who belted an 0-1 knuckle curve out to left-center for the three-run shot that put the O’s on top for the first time all day.
Zach Britton (37 saves, 0.54 ERA) pitched around a walk and a base hit to record the save.
Brad Brach (7-1, 1.34 ERA) got the win in relief, striking out one in a 1-2-3 eighth ahead of the rally.
The Orioles (66-51) remain a half-game out of first in the AL East behind Toronto (67-51).
