Orange_Is_the_New_Black_book_coverPiper Kerman, author of Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, in Cole Hall at Bridgewater College.

In her memoir, Kerman recounts the year that she spent in the Danbury Correctional Facility for a crime she had committed 10 years prior as a brief, careless dalliance in the world of drug trafficking.

The book was adapted into an original Netflix series of the same name by Jenji Kohan.

Kerman has given lectures at numerous campuses, including Fairfield University, New York Law School, Roanoke College, Rutgers University and the University of Tulsa.

She has spoken at the White House and also to the American Correctional Association’s Disproportionate Minority Confinement Task Force, federal probation officers, public defenders, justice reform advocates and volunteers, as well as formerly and currently incarcerated people.

Kerman serves on the board of the Women’s Prison Association.

Books and DVDs will not be sold at the college. Kerman will be available following the lecture to autograph books and DVDs that are brought to the event.

Sponsored by the W. Harold Row Lecture Series, the event is free and open to the public.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college, located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to approximately 1,800 undergraduate students.
