Augusta Health Cancer Center will conduct its annual free Skin Cancer Screening on Tuesday, May 14 beginning at 5:30 pm. The screening will be held on the first floor of the Augusta Health Cancer Center. Please call 540.332.4190 or 540.932.4190 for an appointment. The screenings will be conducted by local dermatologists. The screening is open to those who are not current patients of a dermatologist; priority will be given to those not screened last year.
Skin Cancer Screening is very important. Over the past few years, the incidence of melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer, has been increasing. Although anyone can develop skin cancer, some people are at higher risk. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the risk factors for skin cancer are:
- A lighter natural skin color;
- A personal history of skin cancer;
- A family history of melanoma;
- Exposure to the sun through work and play;
- A history of sunburns in early life;
- Skin that burns, freckles, reddens easily, or becomes painful in the sun; and
- Blue or green eyes.
