Augusta County is hosting a community meeting to cover issues related to the recent property reassessment process.
The meeting is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 6, at 5:30 p.m. at the Augusta County Government Center in Verona.
“The reassessment process is critical to ensuring fairness and equity in property taxation,” said George Price, the county’s Commissioner of the Revenue. “We value the input of our residents and believe their feedback can help us refine our approach moving forward. This meeting is an opportunity for us to listen and learn from those directly affected by the process.”
I wouldn’t want to be Price or any of his office employees going into this meeting, not after that recent reassessment had property values going up, on average, 54 percent countywide.
The Augusta County Board of Supervisors ended up dropping the property tax rate from 63 cents to 52 cents last spring, but that still led to a $12 million aggregate tax increase that was borne by property owners.
Which, that’s paying for things like the Sheriff’s Office, fire and rescue and the school system, and Augusta County has chronically underfunded those things for as long as I can remember.
In any event, people have been venting on the reassessments for the past year, and they get one more shot here in a couple of weeks.
