Augusta County Library will host Spectacular Spectroscopy, a series on hands-on STEM classes for children grades K to 5 at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays, February 1 through March 7. The classes will be presented by Make A Difference 2020 and Ken Overway, Ph.D., chemistry department chair at Bridgewater College. The series is free, but advance registration is required.
Spectacular Spectroscopy begins with an orientation meeting for parents at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, January 31. During the following six weeks, children and their parents will explore and play with light, covering topics such as solar energy and light in medicine through fun STEM activities. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math.
Children’s Librarian Tammy Coulter says, “Many children have the perception that science, technology, engineering and math are difficult or boring. Because STEM training is so important for the future of our community and country, our goal is to make these subjects fun and appealing to children at an early age.”
The Spectacular Spectroscopy classes are appropriate for students that are home schooled or who attend a public or private school. Participants do not need prior knowledge of the subject and do not need to bring any supplies.
To provide these classes, the library is partnering with Make A Difference 2020, a non-profit organization working to inspire at-risk youth in low-income communities to change their “future-self narrative” to employment within science, technology, engineering and math fields.
