Please note: The ribbon cutting has been postponed until Feb. 19 at noon.

The Blue Ridge Children’s Museum in Waynesboro opened its doors on Dec. 31, and later this week, will host a ribbon-cutting and celebration.

The museum is inviting families and supporters who helped bring the vision to life to the ceremony.

The museum has been in the works for almost a decade, and completion was pushed back due to COVID and growing construction costs.

“We are thrilled to get families in the building playing and exploring,” said Karen Orlando, founder of BRCM. “This is just the beginning. We will continue to add activities and exhibits to the space so children will have as many opportunities to play and learn each time they visit.”

A transplant to the area from Massachusetts, Orlando told AFP that the idea for BRCM came out of a perceived need for more activities for children in the community. With a background in special education, she wanted to create an opportunity that was accessible for all children, regardless of abilities.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will give the community a chance to tour the new space and celebrate the milestone as well as learn about the organization’s mission to provide families with an affordable, fun and hands-on environment that encourages exploration of local natural, historical and cultural resources.

The ribbon cutting will take place on Thursday, Jan. 29, at 3:45 p.m.

Blue Ridge Children’s Museum is located at 190 Race Ave. in Waynesboro.

BRCM is open Tuesdays and Wednesday, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 pm.; Thursday, 1-5 p.m.; and Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is $8. Reservations may be made in advance on the museum’s website.
