#11 UVa. rolls past Miami, 65-40, sets up huge showdown with #4 Syracuse

uva-miami1Miami made it interesting for a half, but #11 UVa. held the Hurricanes to four field goals in a dominating second half en route to posting a 65-4o win Wednesday in Charlottesville, Va.

Virginia (24-5, 15-1 ACC) extended its winning streak to 12 games, and the win sets up a showdown with #4 Syracuse on Saturday in Charlottesville that could likely determine the ACC regular-season champion.

The ‘Hoos appeared set to take control midway through the first half, using a 13-5 spurt to open up a 24-15 lead at the 3:17 mark on a dunk by Darion Atkins. But Miami (14-14, 5-10 ACC) closed to within 24-20 on a layup and free throw by Tonye Jekiri with 1:48 left in the first.

A three by London Perrantes extended the lead to 27-20 at the half. UVa. took control early in the second half with a 16-5 scoring run over the first 7:29 to lead 43-25 on a layup by Anthony Gill with 12:31 to go, and Miami would get no closer than 15 the rest of the way.

Virginia dominated the second half largely with defense, limiting the ‘Canes to 4-of-21 shooting. Miami also was 0-for-12 from three-point range for the game, while UVa. was a blistering 9-for-16 (56.3 percent) from long range.

Blistering could also describe freshman point guard London Perrantes, who scored 15 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 shooting from three. Malcolm Brogdon also had 15 points points for Virginia, which got 11 points from Joe Harris and nine rebounds from Akil Mitchell.

Erik Swoope led Miami with 14 points.
