What to look for in a home safe: Fire ratings, locks, and the mistakes buyers make

Most people buy a safe for the wrong reason. Not a bad reason, just an incomplete one. Someone gets broken into, or a neighbor does, and a safe goes on the list next to the deadbolt and the camera doorbell. Theft is real and worth planning for. But ask any insurance adjuster which loss actually destroys more household valuables and the answer is fire, by a wide margin, and fire is the thing a cheap safe handles worst.

That gap between what buyers shop for and what actually threatens their belongings explains most of the disappointment in this category. So before comparing brands or prices, it helps to understand what a safe is genuinely doing for you, and where the specifications either mean something or quietly mean nothing at all.

Why more households keep valuables at home

The amount of value sitting inside the average home has climbed over the past decade, and not only in the obvious ways. Jewelry, cash, and passports were always there. What’s newer is the paperwork: property deeds, trust documents, birth certificates, and increasingly the backup drives and hardware wallets that hold things no bank branch was ever designed to store.

Remote and hybrid work accelerated it. Millions of people now keep business records, client files, and company equipment in a spare bedroom. Safe deposit boxes, meanwhile, have become less convenient than they used to be, with branch closures reducing access and many banks scaling back the service entirely. The practical result is that the household has quietly become its own records vault, usually without anyone deciding it should be.

Fire ratings: The specification that matters most and is understood least

A fire rating describes how long a safe kept its interior below a target temperature during a controlled furnace test, not how long it will survive any fire. The common ratings run 30 minutes, one hour, and two hours, and the interior threshold is typically around 350°F, which is the point at which paper begins to scorch.

Two things follow from that, and both surprise people.

First, paper and digital media have completely different survival points. Documents tolerate roughly 350°F. Hard drives, USB media, photographs, and film start degrading closer to 125°F, well before a standard safe’s interior limit is reached. A safe that protects your deed perfectly can still deliver you a dead backup drive. If digital media matters to you, look specifically for a media-rated safe or use an internal insulated container.

Second, an independently tested rating and a manufacturer’s own claim are not the same product. Look for testing by a recognized laboratory rather than unqualified marketing language. A safe advertised as “fireproof” with no test standard attached is telling you nothing, since no safe is fireproof.

Burglary protection: Where the steel actually goes

Burglary resistance comes down to unglamorous physical details. Body steel thickness matters more than door thickness on cheaper models, because many entry-level safes pair a thick door with thin walls that can be attacked from the side. Internal hinges, relockers that trigger if the lock is punched, and anti-pry door edges all raise the time cost of a forced entry, and time is the entire currency of burglary. Most residential break-ins last under ten minutes.

Burglary ratings exist for this, and they’re worth knowing by name. A residential security container rating is entry level. B-rate and C-rate describe increasing steel thickness. UL-rated TL-15 and TL-30 designations mean the safe resisted attack by tools for 15 or 30 minutes under test conditions. Very few household buyers need TL-30. Almost everyone benefits from knowing the difference before a salesperson explains it.

Locks: The part you’ll interact with every day

Mechanical dial locks are slow to open, need no power, and last decades. Electronic keypads open in seconds and run on batteries that need replacing, which is a maintenance task people forget until they’re locked out. Biometric locks are the fastest and the least consistent, with false rejects rising when fingers are wet, cold, or dirty.

There’s no universal right answer, but there is a useful test: how often will you open this, and under what conditions? A gun safe someone may need to open quickly in the dark argues for a keypad or biometric with a mechanical backup. A document safe opened four times a year argues for a dial that will still work in 2050.

The mistake almost everyone makes: Placement

A 300-pound safe feels immovable in the showroom. Two people with a dolly will remove it from an unbolted position in about four minutes. Anchoring is not optional, and it’s the single most skipped step in residential installations. Most quality safes ship with pre-drilled base holes for exactly this reason.

Placement also affects fire performance. Ground-floor and basement positions generally outperform upper floors, because a burning house collapses downward and a safe that falls two storeys onto rubble may spring its door seal. Interior walls beat exterior walls for temperature exposure. And a safe hidden in a closet behind hanging clothes is found by burglars far more often than owners expect, since closets are the first place searched. Concealment is a bonus, never a strategy.

Firearm owners face a different calculation, because storage isn’t only prudent, it’s legislated. In Canada, non-restricted firearms must be unloaded and secured with a trigger or cable lock, or stored in a locked container, cabinet, or room that cannot be readily broken into. Restricted firearms carry stricter requirements. In the United States, obligations vary by state, with a growing number mandating secure storage where minors are present, and several imposing liability if an unsecured firearm is accessed by a child.

Beyond compliance, the practical requirements differ from a document safe. Owners typically need vertical interior height, barrel racking that doesn’t mar finishes, humidity control to prevent corrosion, and separate lockable interior storage for ammunition. Fire protection matters more than people assume, since ammunition and modern optics both fail well below the temperatures a rated safe holds off.

Where regional conditions change the answer

The right safe is partly a function of where it lives. Climate, housing stock, and local risk all shift the specification.

In Alberta, dry conditions and wildfire exposure push fire rating up the priority list, and rural properties outside the city often need larger-capacity units for equipment and documentation across a working farm. Buyers comparing options for a safe in Calgary tend to weigh fire performance and capacity ahead of everything else.

Dense urban housing creates the opposite constraint. Condos and small offices have no floor space to spare, which puts a premium on compact units that still carry a real fire rating, and on anchoring solutions appropriate for concrete construction. That tradeoff, protection versus footprint, dominates the market for Toronto safes more than any other factor.

Firearm ownership rates change the mix again. In regions with significant hunting and sport shooting populations, demand skews toward tall-body units with interior organization and humidity control, which is why buyers researching gun safes in Edmonton are usually shopping a different product category than someone protecting documents alone.

A short buying checklist

Before you commit to a model, answer these five questions honestly.

What am I actually protecting, and does any of it include digital media that needs a lower temperature threshold than paper? How much of it will there be in five years, since almost everyone outgrows their first safe? What fire rating and burglary rating does the model carry, and who tested it? How often will I open this, and does the lock type suit that? And finally, where exactly will it be bolted down, measured for both door swing and floor loading?

Manufacturers vary widely in how transparently they answer the first three.
