VDOT begins safety improvements at Route 608 in Augusta County

road-work-headerThe Virginia Department of Transportation is making safety improvements at two intersections along Route 608 (Tinkling Springs Road) in Augusta County between Stuarts Draft and Fishersville. Both of these projects are federally funded through the Highway Safety Improvement Program.

At the intersection with Route 648 (Christians Creek Road), contractors are building right- and left-turn lanes on Route 608 and widening the shoulders to improve visibility. Work at this intersection began in October, and drivers should be alert for possible lane or shoulder closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

At the intersection with Route 635 (Augusta Farms Road and Ramsey Road), contractors will install a traffic signal, build turn lanes on both roads and widen the shoulders on Route 608. Utility relocation and signal work is already under way. The majority of the road work will take place next spring.

In August 2014, VDOT awarded construction contracts totaling $1,774,549 to A.R. Coffey & Sons Inc. of Buchanan, Virginia. Both projects are scheduled to be finished by the end of 2015. All work is weather permitting.

The VDOT Staunton District serves Frederick, Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, Page, Rockingham, Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge, Alleghany and Bath counties.

Traffic alerts and traveler information can be obtained by dialing 511. Traffic alerts and traveler information also are available at 511Virginia.org.
