Charlottesville Police are investigating an apparent attempted home invasion in which a man exchanged gunfire with two intruders early Tuesday morning.

The incident took place at a residence in the 700 block of Madison Avenue at 5 a.m. this morning.

A release from the PD tells us that two individuals entered an apartment at the location through an upstairs balcony, which is where gunfire was exchanged between the resident and the two intruders.

The resident was not injured.

Shortly after the incident, a man arrived at Augusta Health in Fishersville, a 38-minute drive via I-64, with a gunshot wound.

He has been identified as 20-year-old Brian Baker Jr.

Charges of breaking and entering while armed are forthcoming.

Police are actively searching for the second suspect; a description will be released once more information is obtained.

During the exchange of gunfire, a gas line was struck, and the Oxford Hill apartment complex was evacuated as a precaution.

The line has since been secured, and residents were allowed to return to their homes.
