Virginia Tech has agreed to a contract extension with head baseball coach John Szefc that will run through the 2030 season, per a release from the school’s athletics department on Wednesday.
Details of the extension were not disclosed; we’re going to ask.
Szefc has compiled a 253-200 record in his nine seasons at Tech, with two NCAA Tournament appearances – in 2022, in which the Hokies finished with a 45-14 record and advanced to a Super Regional; and 2026, which had Virginia Tech finishing at 30-26.
His 2023, 2024 and 2025 teams just missed getting into the NCAA Tournament.
Szefc had more success at Maryland, where he was 179-120 in five seasons, twice reaching the Super Regional round – losing both times in three-games series to Virginia, which went on to win the 2015 national title after knocking out Szefc’s Terps.
“I want to thank Brian White and President Sands for their belief in our coaching staff and me as far as leading the Virginia Tech baseball program into the future,” Szefc said, in a statement highlighted in the press release from Virginia Tech Athletics.
“We are really excited about what we have been able to solidify and put in place thus far. We are obviously very eager to continue into the future and keep building, keep growing this program as we have in the past,” Szefc said.
