Virginia Quilt Museum exhibit ending its run

AFP

newspaper“From Bedroom to Boardroom – Quilts of Southwest Virginia” will be on display through April 26 at the Virginia Quilt Museum in Harrisonburg, Va. Miniature quilts by Kathie Ratcliffe and traditional applique quilts by Anna Holland are also exhibited through the end of this month. More than 50 quilts in these exhibits are made by contemporary and traditional textile artists.

The 2014 exhibit theme for the Virginia Quilt Museum features quilts from different parts of the state. Viewers are challenged to see whether geography influences the art made in those locations. Linda Fiedler from Meadows of Dan, Virginia, Guest Curator for the quilts from Virginia’s southwestern mountains said “even though where we live influences our choices in colors and subjects, we’re up-to-date on techniques and methods used in our art.”

Quilts by Kathie Ratcliffe of Waterford, Virginia contain modern fabrics in traditional designs. Because her quilts are less than 1 foot square, her tiny fabric pieces amaze visitors. Lovers of traditional quilts will also enjoy works by Anna Holland, a master quilter who lived in the Northern Neck region, and the quilts made by the Tavern Quilters Guild of Heathsville, Va.

The next exhibit which opens May 6 will feature quilts and quilted textiles made in the Tidewater region.

A Blue Star museum, the Virginia Quilt Museum is located in historic downtown Harrisonburg, just off Interstate 81, in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. Open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. More information is available on the web at www.vaquiltmuseum. org. Group tour rates are available by calling the museum at (540)433-3818.
