VDOT: Road construction, maintenance in the area for the coming week

VDOT has released the updated schedule for road construction and maintenance in the area for the week of Sept. 28-Oct. 2.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. When traveling through a work zone, use extreme caution and be alert for lane closures and traffic-pattern changes.

Augusta County


Interstate 64 

  • *NEW* Mile marker 92 to 97, eastbound and westbound – Right shoulder closures including along the off-ramps at Exit 94 for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Interstate 81 

  • *NEW* Mile marker 209 to 236, northbound and southbound – Overnight mobile left lane closures for vegetation management, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Wednesday nights.
  • Exit 213, northbound – Shoulder closures for pipe replacement along the off-ramp, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • *NEW* Mile marker 211 to 227, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures for sign work including along the off-ramps at Exit 213, 222 and 227, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • Mile marker 218 to 214, southbound – Overnight mobile right lane closures for pavement marking, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Tuesday night.
  • *NEW* Mile marker 220 to 221, northbound – Shoulder closures for sign work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • *NEW* Mile marker 221 to 222, northbound – Overnight single lane closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. on the nights of Oct. 4-22.
  • *UPDATE* Mile marker 221 to 227, northbound and southbound – Southbound overnight right lane closures between mile marker 224 and 222 for bridge deck work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Thursday night. Single-lane traffic on exit 221 southbound ramp to I-64 East 24/7. Shoulder closures and travel lane shifts northbound and southbound 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for I-81 widening project with estimated completion in summer 2027. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour.
  • Mile marker 225 to 234, northbound – Overnight mobile right lane closures for pavement marking, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Tuesday night.
  • Mile marker 234 to 237, northbound and southbound – Left shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes with estimated completion of late 2027.

Primary and secondary roads

  • *NEW* Route 11 (Greenville Avenue, Staunton) – Northbound and southbound single lane closures between Business Route 11/Route 254 (Commerce Road/Greenville Avenue) and Hampton Street for rock and soil testing, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
  • *NEW* Route 250 (Richmond Avenue, Staunton) – Eastbound and westbound single lane closures between Route 11 (Greenville Avenue) and Village Drive for rock and soil testing, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
  • *NEW* Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) – On-ramp to southbound I-81 closed for pouring concrete, 12 noon to 6 p.m. Thursday. Follow posted detour.
  • Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) – Eastbound right lane closures for turn lane construction between Route 636 (Old Goose Creek Road) and Route 822 (Greenview Drive), 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday.
  • *NEW* Route 252 (Middlebrook Road) – Flagger traffic control for tree removal operations between Route 701 (Howardsville Road) and Rockbridge County line, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 28 through Oct. 9.
  • Route 252 (Middlebrook Avenue) – Flagger traffic control for tree removal operations between the Staunton city line and Route 802 Dynamite Road, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through October 12.
  • Route 254 (Hermitage Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 642 (Barrenridge Road) and Route 839 (Eureka Mill Road) for overhead powerline work, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Wednesday.
  • *UPDATE* Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) – Slow roll traffic control between Route 613 (Old Greenville Road) and Route 11 (Lee Highway) interchanges for utility work, 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday morning (Sept. 27).
  • Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) – Overnight flagger traffic control for paving between Route 11 (Commerce Road/Lee-Jackson Highway) and Route 250 (Churchville Avenue) including interchange ramps, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Thursday night.
  • Route 358 (Woodrow Wilson Avenue) – Shoulder closures between Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) and Wilson Elementary School for work related to roadway widening, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Friday.
  • *NEW* Route 1735 (Quail Lane) – Flagger traffic control for paving operations, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 28 through Oct. 9.
  • Various roads – Flagger traffic control for drainage work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 to 3 p.m. weekdays.

Nelson County


Primary and secondary roads

  • Route 29 (Thomas Nelson Hwy.) and Route 653 (Oak Ridge Road) intersection improvement and turn lane project. The right, northbound lane of Route 29 is closed from 0.6 miles south of Route 653 to 0.2 miles north of Rt. 653. The speed limit along Route 29 is reduced to 50 mph while the lane closure is in place. Expect temporary flagging operations on Oak Ridge Road as work is performed on the shoulders and ditches. The expected completion date is October 9, 2026.
  • Route 29 (Thomas Nelson Highway) from the Amherst County Line to Route 718 (Mountain Cove Rd.) safety improvements. Shoulder widening, rumble strips, and guardrail replacement project. Lane closures expected. Expected completion July 2027.

Rockbridge County


Interstate 64 

  • *NEW* Mile marker 46 to 54, eastbound and westbound – Overnight left lane closures for vegetation management, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Wednesday nights.
  • *NEW* Mile marker 48 to 49, eastbound – Right shoulder closures for debris removal, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday.
  • *NEW* Mile marker 53 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Right shoulder closures including along the Exit 55 off-ramps for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Interstate 81 

  • *NEW* Mile marker 174 to 201, northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane closures for vegetation management, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Wednesday nights.
  • Mile marker 174 to 177, northbound – Overnight single lane closures for paving, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Thursday night.
  • *NEW* Exit 188A, northbound – Mobile left shoulder closures along the Exit 188A off-ramp for debris removal, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday.
  • *NEW* Mile marker 190 to 191, northbound – Left shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday.
  • *NEW* Mile marker 191 to 203, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures for sign work including along the off-ramps at Exit 191, 195 and 200, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • *NEW* Mile marker 195 to 191, southbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday nights.

  • *NEW* Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Northbound shoulder closures for mowing operations between Route 785 (Sam Houston Way) and Route 251 (Link Road), 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday.
  • *NEW* Route 39 (Maury River Road) – Flagger traffic control for tree removal between Route 727 (Smokey Row Road) and Route 622 (Alone Mill Road), 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday.
  • Route 252 (Brownsburg Turnpike) – Flagger traffic control for tree removal between Route 722 (Rocky Lane) and the Augusta County line, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday.
  • Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.
  • Various roads – Flagger traffic control for grading, pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, pavement patching, shoulder repairs and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

Rockingham County


Interstate 81 

  • Mile marker 237 to 240, northbound and southbound – Left shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes with estimated completion of late 2027.
  • *NEW* Mile marker 240 to 260, northbound and southbound – Overnight mobile left lane closures for vegetation management, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Wednesday nights.
  • *UPDATE* Mile marker 240 to 251, northbound and southbound – Overnight southbound single lane closures for right shoulder strengthening/widening and setting steel barrier on left shoulders, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday to Thursday nights through January 2027. Traffic restrictions are for I-81 widening project. Work zone speed limit 55 miles an hour.
  • *NEW* Exit 243, southbound – Closure of off-ramp to Route 11 (South Main Street) for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through night of October 16. Motorists should follow posted detour.
  • *NEW* Mile marker 255 to 263, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for bridge inspection, 8 p.m. to midnight Monday night.
  • Mile marker 258 to 264, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for bridge painting, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights and 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday nights through February

Primary and secondary roads

  • *NEW* Route 11 (South Valley Pike) – Southbound right shoulder closures for sign work just north of intersection with Route 257 (Friedens Church Road/Dinkel Avenue), 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • *UPDATE* Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Turn lane and shoulder closures between Route 704 (Oakwood Drive) and Harrisonburg city limits for work related to widening and intersection improvements, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Friday.
  • Route 11 (North Valley Pike) – Southbound turn-lane closures and travel-lane shifts for sidewalk installation between Jewell Street and Harrisonburg northern city limits, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. Estimated project completion fall 2027.
  • Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) – Westbound right shoulder closures for utility work between Elkton Middle School and Route 634 (Tanyard Bridge Road), 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through October 31.
  • *UPDATE* Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) – Single-lane closures as needed between Hawkins Street and University Boulevard. Shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for sign and signal work related to interchange improvements with completion in October 2026.
  • *NEW* Route 42(North Main Street, Timberville) – Flagger traffic control between C Street East and Route 881 (Orchard Drive) for bridge inspection, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 28 through Oct. 9.
  • Route 42(Harpine Highway) – Single lane closures for paving between Harrisonburg city limits and Route 772 (Greenmount Road), 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through October 9.
  • *NEW* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 1604 (Tiger Camp Road) and Route 1601 (New Haven Road) for bridge inspection, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday.
  • Route 259 (Brocks Gap Road) – Flagger traffic control for utility work between Route 820 (Bergton Road) and Route 921 (Lairs Run Road), 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through October 9.
  • Route 340 (Stuart Avenue, Elkton) – Single lane closures for utility work between Spotswood Avenue and Blue and Gold Drive, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Wednesday.
  • Route 765 (Buttermilk Creek Road) – Flagger traffic control for utility work between Route 753 (Kratzer Road) and Route 42 (Harpine Highway), 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through October 23.
  • Route 794 (Craney Island Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 11 (North Valley Pike) and Route 620 (Mountain Valley Road/Smith Creek Road) for bridge painting, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through February 2.
  • Route 796 (Moores Mill Road) – Flagger traffic control near Route 620 (Mountain Valley Road) intersection for bridge painting, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through February 2.
  • Route 798 (Arkton Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 11 (North Valley Pike) and Route 620 (Mountain Valley Road) for bridge painting, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through February 2.
