A group of early music friends from the Charlottesville area are putting on a benefit concert on Friday to aid families left without means of support by the mass detentions of Latino men in Greene County.
Admission to the concert, being held at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 W. High St., Charlottesville, 7:30 p.m. start time, is free, with donations to go Sin Barreras/Without Barriers Inc., the local nonprofit connecting Spanish speakers and recent immigrants with resources from food to interpretation to legal support.
“With so many immigrants now facing detention and deportation, EMAP is proud to support the work of Sin Barreras with this concert,” said David McCormick, executive director of the national nonprofit Early Music America. “Though many of the works in this concert are centuries old, the theme of separation from loved ones is timeless. Our selections bring attention both to the cruelty of current immigration policies and the tireless work of Sin Barreras and other local organizations to provide support at a critical moment.”
The term “early music” refers to Western music from the Middle Ages through roughly 1750, including that of the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods.
The program for Friday’s concert includes 13th-century Cantigas de Santa Maria, 18th-century Scottish tunes, and even a “retro” version of a Bob Dylan tune.
