A Staunton man is facing at least two felonies after fleeing when police attempted to stop him for driving a car reported stolen.

Cody Joseph Elwood Shores, 27, is being held at the Charlottesville Albemarle Regional Jail without bond.

According to the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy attempted to stop Shores on Hermitage Road Friday.

The 2007 Chrysler 300 he was driving had been reported stolen from Buena Vista.

The pursuit took place on Hermitage Road, Saint James Road and Long Meadow Road. The suspect vehicle proceeded onto Entry School Road, where it crashed and rolled over multiple times.

Shores was ejected from the vehicle, and along with one passenger, was transported to Augusta Health for medical treatment.

Shores was later transferred to the University of Virginia Medical Center, where he was treated and released. He was then taken into custody at the hospital by the University of Virginia Police Department.

Shores has been charged with the following offenses:

  • 46.2-817 – Felony elude law enforcement
  • 18.2-109 – Possession of a stolen vehicle (felony)
  • 46.2-852 – Reckless driving
  • 46.2-301 – Driving while license revoked/suspended

Virginia State Police responded to the scene and investigated the traffic crash, according to the ACSO.

Shores has faced a litany of similar charges in the past for burglary, grand larceny and destruction of property.

In 2018, he was sentenced to an active six years and six months in prison, with 19 years suspended. He was also placed on five years of probation, according to court records. According to media reports, Shores broke into a random home in Staunton armed with a hunting knife in a robbery attempt. He was arrested after the homeowner called 911 from her locked bedroom door.
