Twenty-five of the 30 states that gave their electoral votes to Donald Trump in 2024 have above-average numbers of SNAP recipients.
Naturally, Trump doesn’t know this.
“You know, largely, when you talk about SNAP, you’re talking about largely Democrats,” said Trump, in a gaggle with reporters on Air Force One, on his way to a Great Gatsby-themed Halloween party at his Florida golf club, on Friday.
That party, by the way – did whoever thought it up actually read The Great Gatsby? Because it’s kinda, sorta about the excess of the wealthy elites of the ‘20s, published in 1925, four years ahead of the stock market crash that precipitated the Great Depression.
F. Scott Fitzgerald was basically telling you what was going to happen.
What better way to mark the Trumpian effort to cut off food stamps to 40 million Americans than a party celebrating the moral depravity of the gilded elites that Fitzgerald was warning you about?
Among those not invited to the soiree was Louisiana Congressman Clay Higgins, who offered an observation on SNAP recipients on Friday rivaling that of Marie Antoinette, of “Let them eat cake” fame.
“Any American who has been receiving $4,200 dollars per year of free groceries and does not have at least one month of groceries stocked should never again receive SNAP, because wow, stop smoking crack,” Higgins posted on Twitter, which, wow.
That’s what they think of you, basically.
And when I say you, I’m referring to exit polls from 2024, which had Trump winning voters reporting less than $50,000 in annual income by two points, and winning among voters without a high-school degree by 13 points.
I mean, that’s your base of SNAP recipients there.
Not “largely Democrats.”
He’s having caviar and Dom Perignon, and he thinks it’s OK to cut off your benefits because he thinks you’re a Democrat, and one of his MAGAs in Congress thinks you smoke crack.
But it’s Democrats who look down their noses at you.
