Our Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles never sniffed the 2025 MLB Playoffs, but several of the guys who started the season inside the Beltway are playing in October, thanks to the trade deadline.
As the front offices flipped expiring contracts for prospects, older guys got a lifeline to a possible World Series ring.
The idea for this one came when I saw former O’s setup man Andrew Kittredge closing out the San Diego Padres for his new team, the Chicago Cubs, on Thursday.
A little research got me a decent list of former Nats and O’s still playing:
Chicago Cubs
- Andrew Kittredge: The aforementioned. Kittredge was 2-1 with a 3.32 ERA in 21 appearances for the Cubs, with 32 Ks in 21.2 innings, and a 0.83 WHIP.
- Michael Soroka: Soroka pitched this season in Washington, where he was 3-8 with a 4.87 ERA in 16 starts. Soroka made six appearances, one a start, with the Cubs, with a 1.08 ERA, and went two-thirds of an inning in relief in the Cubs’ 3-0 Game 2 loss in the wild-card round this week.
Detroit Tigers
- Kyle Finnegan: The former Nats closer (1-4, 20 saves, 4.38 ERA in DC in 2025) was lights-out for the Tigers, with a 3-0 record and four saves, and a 1.50 ERA in 16 appearances, with 23Ks and four walks in 18.0 innings. Finnegan pitched twice in the Cleveland wild-card series, walking one and striking out one in three innings across the two appearances.
Los Angeles Dodgers
- Alex Call: The former Nats utilityman hit .247 with a .717 OPS in 38 games with the Dodgers, and had a pinch-hit single in the 10-5 win over Cincinnati in Game 1 of their wild-card series this week.
New York Yankees
- Amed Rosario: Another former Nats utilityman, Rosario hit .303 in 33 at-bats with the Yankees, and had an RBI single in the fourth inning of the Yanks’ 4-0 win over Boston in the clinching Game 3 last night.
Toronto Blue Jays
- Seranthony Dominguez: The former O’s setup man was 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 21.0 innings with the Blue Jays, with 25 Ks and 12 bases on balls. Toronto, the East Division champ and #1 seed in the AL Playoffs, will open the Division Series with Game 1 at home against the Yankees on Saturday.
