A detour will be in place on Hopeman Parkway in Waynesboro due to a potential sinkhole starting on Thursday.

According to Waynesboro Public Works, a new traffic plan and detour is necessary to investigate a potential sinkhole.

Remediation work should be done by March 21. The work is being completed in the area near Parkway Village Apartments.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area if possible and to follow all detour signs and directions.

Hopeman Parkway was the site of a horrific two-vehicle accident that killed a Waynesboro woman on Feb. 25 approximately one mile from the potential sinkhole.

Brittany Jean Comer, 31, was pronounced dead after another vehicle traveling more than 70 mph, according to police, struck her vehicle. Two children also sustained major injuries but have been released from the hospital.

Brianca Elaine Estes, 31, told police she had used fentanyl and methamphetamine within 24 hours of the fatal crash. Her wife also sustained serious injuries.

Estes have been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Additional charges are pending.

She remains in Middle River Regional Jail after her bond was denied.
