The U.S. House voted Wednesday to create a bipartisan task force to investigate the attempted assassination of ex-president Donald Trump.

The task force will consist of seven Republicans and six Democrats, so, actually, there is a sliver of partisanship to this thing.

The vote in favor of the resolution to create the task force was 416-0, with 16 House members not voting.

A joint statement from House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries noted that the task force “will be empowered with subpoena authority and will move quickly to find the facts, ensure accountability, and make certain such failures never happen again.”

Virginia Democrat Abigail Spanberger issued a statement in support of the resolution.

“As a former intelligence officer and former federal law enforcement officer, I remain stunned by the obvious security failures that enabled a gunman to perpetrate a shooting at a campaign rally that killed one man, wounded two others, and nearly succeeded in assassinating former President Trump in Pennsylvania. We cannot let it happen again.

“While the resignation of the U.S. Secret Service Director earlier this week was an overdue step toward accountability, the American people deserve answers. I’m hopeful that this new, bipartisan Task Force will reveal more details about how a would-be assassin came mere millimeters from taking the life of former President Trump. Those culpable for this breakdown in security must face disciplinary action.”
