Albemarle County Police have obtained nine additional aggravated sexual battery charges against a former social and emotional learning coach at two county elementary schools.

A release from the police department on Tuesday tells us that a grand jury handed down fresh indictments against Michael Swiney on Monday.

The new indictments, per the release, involve three additional victims.

Swiney, who worked at Woodbrook Elementary and Hollymead Elementary, was indicted by a grand jury in June on 11 charges – seven felony counts of aggravated sexual battery, three felony counts of indecent liberties, and one felony count of attempted aggravated sexual battery.

The ACPD said back in June that it had initiated its investigation in January into the matter involving Swiney when a victim came forward to report that a staff member at their school had engaged them in inappropriate sexual contact.

The investigation into Swiney revealed three additional juvenile victims who also reported unwanted sexual contact between August 2024 and January 2026, according to the ACPD.

“We know this is difficult news for everyone who has been impacted by this case and want to assure the community that our detectives have never stopped working on this investigation,” said ACPD Capt. Michael Talbert, who heads up the department’s Criminal Investigations Division.

“Our detectives have continued to follow new information and work diligently to move this case forward. We will continue that work and do everything within our ability to seek justice,” Talbert said.

Swiney continues to be held without bond at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.

These indictments were issued as part of a criminal investigation that is active and ongoing.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Albemarle County Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division at 434-296-5807.
