The first radio station to ever broadcast from the Shenandoah Valley will observe its 75th anniversary on June 9, 2010. WSVA-550AM, owned by VerStandig Broadcasting, will mark the occasion by publishing a cookbook highlighting recipes submitted by local listeners.
“We are excited about making this new cookbook available,” WSVA General Manager Susanne Myers said. “Recipes were submitted by our loyal listeners over an extended period of time. We think the collection of recipes found in WSVA’s 75th Anniversary Cookbook offers a unique reflection of local food culture.”
The Shenandoah Valley has been known throughout recorded history as the “breadbasket” of Virginia. WSVA has decided to mark the station’s 75th anniversary by making a significant contribution to the modern equivalent of the Valley’s breadbasket. “All proceeds from the sale of this cookbook will be donated to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank,” said Program Director Frank Wilt. “WSVA is pleased that we can share our success with those in need in the community.”
WSVA radio was established in 1935 as the first radio station in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and began broadcasting from downtown Harrisonburg using 500 watts of power. It also had a remote studio atop the Stonewall Jackson Hotel in Staunton. The station recently moved to a state-of-the-art broadcast facility off Garbers Church Road in Harrisonburg where it continues to air timely news, information, weather, sports, agriculture and entertainment programming. WSVA also streams its programming worldwide via www.wsvaonline.com.
WSVA will broadcast several special programs on the afternoon of June 8th and throughout the day on June 9th, reflecting on the heritage of the radio station and its 75 years of service to the area.
